Fall is one of the best times for adopting and cleaning a nearby stormdrain. Each stormdrain cleaned helps reduce the debris and nutrients that will make their way to local lakes and wetlands next spring. With thousands of volunteers participating in adopt-a-drain across the Twin Cities, the impact on water resources is immense!

Our goal is to reach 100 lbs of debris removed from drains! Leaves, grass clippings, and sand may seem "natural," but these things belong on the land - they become problematic for water quality and clog waterways. Drain cleaning in mid-late October supports street sweeping efforts, since the timing and number of street sweeper passes that are possible may still leave many drains clogged with leaves. These leaves carry nutrients such as phosphorus that feed and strengthen algae blooms, which can potentially be toxic for pets and people.

Surface cleaning only: Material requiring reaching into drains is not part of the program and reaching below street level isn't advised.

Visit adopt-a-drain.org to participate and report drain cleaning efforts.
