Pet Waste Tidbit of the Month

A compost heap will not become hot enough to kill the pathogens in dog feces. Pathogens in dog feces can also contaminate your vegetable garden.

Bonus Tips

Seasonal actions for water and soil health:

  • Sweep fallen leaves up off the curb and away from stormdrains before they get crunched and matted. These matted leaves send excess nutrients to nearby waterbodies even if the rain doesn't directly wash them into the stormdrain.

Looking ahead:

  • For composting, store dry leaves separately from the compost pile. These will come in handy to balance your compost nutrients and dampen potential odors in the spring when leaves are in short supply.
  • Observe where stormwater runoff is traveling over pavement and visualize how this impacts winter maintenance. Redirecting downspouts, extending downspouts, or even channeling downspout connections beneath sidewalks can all reduce ice formation and winter maintenance chores.
