Watershed organizations are required by the State of Minnesota (through the Board of Water and Soil Resources) to compile water management plans for the protection and enhancement of the resources it is in charge of. Plans are designed and implemented to be used for 10 years, with updating amendments typically every 2 years. VLAWMO's current Plan was approved in 2007 and will expire at the end of 2016. The proceeding Water Plan will be VLAWMO's 4th, and will come into effect at the beginning of 2017 and will be used through 2026.
Financial reports and management letters are completed annually by an independent auditor. It is the auditor's responsibility to review financial records of VLAWMO to develop a professional opinion of accounting correctness within the organization "in accordance with accounting principle generally accepted in the United States."
